National Paralympic Committee Pakistan
National Paralympic Committee of Pakistan (NPCP) is a registered sole representative organization of the International Paralympic Committee in Pakistan further affiliated with Asian Paralympic Committee (APC) and the only body with the mandate to represent before the IPC and to deal with sports for the disabled in the country as well. Run by a group of dedicated volunteers, the status of NPCP is at par with the Pakistan Olympic Association which is the sole representative organization of the International Olympic Committee in Pakistan and deals with sports for athletes without disabilities.
Since its inception in December 1998, the National Paralympic Committee of Pakistan has been able to organize 43 Training camps, 22 National sports Championships and 06 National Paralympic Games including one exclusively for women with disabilities. Besides, the NPCP has also been successful in ensuring the participation of athletes with disabilities in 25 international/regional sports events. Our athletes with disabilities while competing on international sports standards have secured 72 medals comprising 22 Gold, 26 Silver and 24 Bronze Medals. One of our star athletes Mr Haider Ali, has been awarded the “Pride of Performance Accolade” by the President of Pakistan on 23rd March 202 for his exemplary medals winning performance in Para Athletics and securing two Paralympic Medals for Pakistan
It is necessary to clarify here that the Paralympics Events are organized on international sports standards, rules and technicalities with no concession of disability. Instead, these become more difficult than Olympics as the Athletes have to additionally go through a strict medical classification process and also have to follow the Anti-Doping and all other Rules as meant for the able-bodied. The titles thus secured by the athletes with disabilities are based on competitive performance and not on sympathy or as a mere recreation activity.
NPC – Pakistan has also played a significant role in the promotion of sports for the disabled in Asia. Jointly with Malaysia, it strove for the establishment of the Asian Paralympic Committee as the only regional organization with a mandate to represent Asia at International Paralympic Committee and to promote Paralympic Movement therein. From its inception in 2002 till 2014, Pakistan held the portfolio of its Vice President and since the year 2006 to date, the South Asian countries have elected Secretary-General of NPC Pakistan as its representative to the Board of Executives of Asian Paralympic Committee. In the year 2015, representatives of NPC Pakistan have also been appointed as Executive Members of the APC Women in Sports Committee and APC Sports Development Committee for the term 2015 – 2019.
